Rig site camp

Rig site camp standards ensure safety, health, and efficiency for remote workforces, covering modular housing, essential amenities (power, water, waste), strict safety protocols (H2S, fire), noise/behavior rules, and distance from the wellhead, with variations based on location and company requirements, aiming for a functional "home away from home". Key aspects include providing full accommodation and food in remote full camps or allowances in simpler 'Texas camps', robust waste treatment (sewage, grease), emergency preparedness (SCBA, alarms), and clear guidelines for noise, cleanliness, and substance use.

Key Components of Rig Site Camp Standards

  • Accommodation

  • Full Camps: Remote locations offer full food and housing, with transport to the rig.

  • Design: Modular units, wider designs for more space, and enhanced insulation for extreme temperatures are common.

Health & Safety:

  • H2S Safety: Portable detectors, escape masks, SCBA, and cascade breathing systems required in hazardous areas.

  • Emergency Systems: Public address systems, backup power, and communication links (phone/radio) are standard.

  • Hygiene: Anti-slip mats, proper boot storage, and rules against flushing foreign objects.

  • Equipment Distance: Living quarters, offices, and power units must maintain safe distances from the wellhead (e.g., 170 ft for quarters).

  • Utilities & Waste Management:

  • Power: Reliable diesel generators with emergency shutdowns and stable auxiliary power for other units.

  • Water: Provision for clean water.

  • Sewage: Advanced treatment units compliant with discharge regulations, including grease traps for kitchen waste.

  • Operational Rules & Conduct:

  • Behavior: Respectful conduct, limited noise (TV/radio), appropriate language.

  • Substance Use: Alcohol and drug use strictly forbidden.

  • Dressing: Proper attire, boots stored in designated areas.

Industry Standards & Guidelines

  • OPAL (Oman): Major energy companies in Oman endorse a unified Camp Standard for health, safety, and environment.

  • IADC: The International Association of Drilling Contractors provides standard equipment list templates to streamline tenders and ensure comprehensive summaries.
