A Professional Rig Inspectors

A professional Rig Inspector should possess a combination of technical education, industry experience, inspection certifications, NDT knowledge, and safety training. The exact qualifications depend on whether the inspector is inspecting the drilling structure, hoisting equipment, well control equipment (BOP), or conducting a full rig acceptance inspection.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirement Recommended Qualification

Education Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Marine Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline.

Industry Experience 5–10 years in drilling rig operations, maintenance, inspection, or manufacturing.

Rig Experience Experience with land rigs, jack-up rigs, offshore drilling units, or workover rigs

English Good written and spoken English for inspection reports .

Required Industry standards

Required Industry Standards

A competent Rig Inspector should be familiar with:

  • API RP 4G – Inspection of drilling structures

  • API Spec 4F

  • API RP 54

  • API Spec 8C

  • API Spec 7K

  • API Spec 7L

  • API Std 53 (Well Control Equipment)

  • API Std 16A

  • API Std 16C

  • API Std 16D

  • API Std 16AR (Repair & Remanufacture)

  • OEM maintenance manuals

  • Manufacturer acceptance criteria

API RP 4G provides the inspection methodology for drilling and well-servicing structures and defines different inspection categories. Category III and IV inspections require inspectors with appropriate knowledge and experience, while Category IV inspections should be performed or closely supervised by a Professional Engineer, an OEM representative, or another authorized representative who also meets the Category III competency requirements.

Safety Certifications

Safety Certifications

Typical requirements include:

  • IADC RigPass

  • H₂S Awareness

  • Working at Height

  • Confined Space

  • First Aid / CPR

  • Fire Fighting

  • Offshore Survival (BOSIET/FOET) for offshore inspectors

RigPass is widely recognized as the baseline safety orientation for personnel working on drilling rigs.
