Snubbing Unit

A snubbing unit is a specialized hydraulic rig system used in the oil and gas industry to insert or remove pipe (tubing, drill pipe, or casing) from live, pressurized wells without needing to kill the well. It provides a safe, cost-effective alternative to conventional workover rigs by enabling well intervention, completion, and drilling operations under pressure.

Key Aspects of Snubbing Units:

  • Types:

    • Hydraulic Jack (HWO/Snubbing): The most common type, offering high lift/snub capacity and acting as a stand-alone or rig-assist unit.

    • Rig Assist: Operates in conjunction with a conventional workover rig.

    • Stand-alone: Operates independently of other rigs, ideal for quick deployment.

  • Components: Hydraulic jacks, stationary and traveling slips, a work basket/control cabin, and a blowout preventer (BOP) stack.

  • Benefits: Reduces the need for expensive kill fluids, avoids formation damage, and saves time through faster rig-up/down.

  • Operation: When the well pressure exceeds the weight of the pipe (light pipe), the unit pushes the string in. When the pipe is heavy enough, it controls the descent.

  • Regulations: Operations are highly technical, requiring strict safety measures, including specialized PPE (hard hat, safety gear) and adherence to, for instance, API standards

  • Applications: Used for well completion, fishing, milling, drilling, fishing, and packer setting, particularly for ESP change-outs and plug & abandonment (P&A).
